Convert an amount at the reference rate

Converts an amount between two currencies at the reference rate your account holds for the pair. Use it to show an indicative figure — a price in a visitor's currency, a balance restated, an order total previewed — where no payer is being committed to anything.

This is not POST /v1/conversions/quote, and neither substitutes for the other.

  • This operation is symmetric and free. Either field may be USD, the same eight currencies are accepted on both sides, and the result carries no provider spread and no fee.
  • A quote is asymmetric and priced. Its source is the payer's local currency and can never be USD, and its sell_rate already carries your account's FX fee.

Do not quote a payer from this operation. The figure it returns is lower than what a payer must actually send, by the spread and the FX fee both. Pricing a payment is POST /v1/conversions/quote.

No ability is required, and the same notes as the wallets operation apply: any valid key of your account reaches it, 403 insufficient_scope cannot occur, and the only 403 you can meet is ORIGIN_NOT_ALLOWED. A key is still required — an anonymous request is refused with 401 missing_api_key.

Rates are stored per account and refreshed on demand. The first call for a pair whose stored rate has gone stale fetches a fresh one, so it can be noticeably slower than the calls that follow it.

Refusals past the shared ones: 422 VALIDATION_FAILED and 422 EXCHANGE_RATE_UNAVAILABLE. This operation declares no 500 of its own: every failure inside it — a genuinely unpriceable pair, an upstream that timed out, an outage on our side — is deliberately reported as the same 422, so that refusal can be temporary. Retry once before concluding the pair is unsupported.

A plain reference conversion between two currencies. It applies no provider spread and no fee, and it is symmetric — either field may be USD. It is not a settlement quote: pricing what a payer must send is POST /v1/conversions/quote, and quoting a payer from this operation understates it.

Rates are stored per account and refreshed on demand: the first call for a pair whose stored rate has gone stale fetches a fresh one, so it can be slower than the calls that follow it.
